2003 All-West Coast Conference Second Team 2001 All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention GENERAL CAPSULE - Had one of his best seasons in 2003, taking home All West-Coast Conference Second Team honors... demonstrated solid improvement both offensively and defensively... solidified himself as great defensive player at shortstop, where he will start... capable of hitting over 15 homeruns in the 2004 campaign. AT USF (2003): Exploded for a career year as a junior, cementing his reputation as one of the top infielders in the West Coast Conference... set career-highs in batting average (.325), RBI (34) and walks (28) despite missing 13 games with a broken hand... committed just six errors, with two coming in the season opener, and posted a .962 fielding percentage at shortstop... heated up for league action, batting .339 with five doubles, two triples, seven homers and a team-best 29 RBI... went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI in a win at San Diego (3/16)... went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo homeruns at Loyola Marymount (3/21)... hit .400 (8-20) in six games against the Lions with a double, two homeruns, four RBI and five walks... drove in two or more runs in eight games... posted 17 multi-hit games... launched homers in back-to-back games against Pepperdine (4/17-18)... ranked second on the team in extra-base hits with 17. AT USF (2002) - Hit over .300 with 9 homeruns, while playing with a broken jaw through 22 games... AT USF (2001) - Earned All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention selection in his first year of college baseball... hit only homerun of the season, a solo shot, in dramatic fashion in USF's upset of #1 Standford at Sunken Diamond (4/17)... finished 2-for3 against the Cardinal with two runs... turned in 10-game hitting streak from 3/3 through 3/19... posted 16 multi-hit games and collected three hits twice - at Sacramento State (2/14) and at Loyola Marymount (3/24)... collected a pair of hits in three consecutive games against the Lions (5/6 - 5/9)... went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in first college game against Saint Mary's (2/3). OTHER BASEBALL EXPERIENCE - Played for the Decatur Blues, the 2002 Central Illinois Collegiate League Champions... played Nor-Cal baseball for two years in summer league... two-time silver medalist for the 16 and under AAU and the 18 and under AAU... also received the all-tournament award in the 18 and under tournament. PREP CAREER - Lettered in baseball for three years at Moreau Catholic... was voted the team MVP following his junior and senior year... made First Team All-Hayward Athletic League three years in a row... also named to the First Team All-East Bay for the Mariners... featured in Sports Focus play of the week. GIARRATANO ON GAERLAN - "Armand put together one of the best seasons we've seen - nine homeruns, a good amount of RBIs and he hit over .300. He played with a broken jaw and lost over 20 pounds. It was remarkable for him to play through that injury." |
